Speakers
Dr. Eugenia Martinez Hernandez
Dr. Eugenia Martinez Hernandez has been with the Hospital Clinic Barcelona (Spain) since 2013. She began as a fellow, focusing on autoimmune encephalitis and paraneoplastic syndromes, and later transitioned to a neurologist role in the Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis Unit within the Department of Neurology. Additionally, she serves as a senior researcher at the Laboratory Pathogenesis of Autoimmune Neuronal Diseases, part of the FCRB-IDIBAPS.
Throughout her career, she has contributed to various publicly-funded research projects, prospective patient registries, and clinical trials. Dr. Martinez earned her PhD in 2014. She also gained valuable experience working in the lab of Prof. Josep Dalmau in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she specialized in autoimmune encephalitis and other central nervous system disorders.
Prof. John Manis
Prof. John Manis completed his training in Internal Medicine and subsequently pursued fellowships in Hematology, Oncology, and Transfusion Medicine, gaining significant exposure to patients with immunodeficiency. In 1995, he moved to Boston Children's Hospital for a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Frederick Alt. In 2004, Prof. Manis joined the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Pathology. He currently runs a lab dedicated to understanding the fundamental mechanisms governing B-cell development.
Since 2010, Prof. Manis has served as the Director of the Therapeutic Apheresis Unit and the Stem Cell Collection Facility at Boston Children's Hospital. His work involves the collection of human peripheral blood stem cells, a crucial process for developing disease-specific cellular therapies.
Moderator
Gerda Leitner, MD, is an Associate Professor specializing in transfusion medicine and general medicine. She served as the Medical Director of the University Clinic for Blood Group Serology and Transfusion Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna in Austria, retiring at the end of 2021.
She is currently the President-Elect of the European Society for Hemapheresis and previously served as President of the Austrian Society for Blood Group Serology, Transfusion Medicine, Regenerative Medicine, and Immunogenetics (OEGBT). She now works as a freelancer with the Austrian Red Cross.
